Snowball Biathlon

Girdwood has many neat quirky traditions: Thanksgiving dinner at the Fire Hall, fireworks on Mt. Alyeska for New Year's Eve (since there are about 20 hours of daylight here for the 4th of July), A Sunrise Easter Service on Mt. Alyeska, The Forest Fair (a fun festival with lots of hippies and great food and music), The Fungus Fair (a festival devoted to mushrooms) and the Snowball Biathlon!
The Snowball Biathlon was a cross-country event for the whole family. Participants skied approximately 1 km and then threw snowballs at 3 targets. The participants included adults in colorful costumes, kids who were quite skilled at skate skiing (one even lost his poles and kept going around the track), children in sleds and the staple of Girdwood - free roaming dogs!
