Quay's Visit: The Bake Shop

A trip to Girdwood is not complete without a visit to The Bake Shop!

The warm environment, friendly staff, laid back atmosphere and delicious homemade food (sourdough bread, sourdough pancakes, sweet rolls, soups, fresh salads, pizza, cookies, great lattes, etc.) make it worth a stop when in Girdwood :)!

Of course, we had to expose Quay to this Alaska treasure. So we met our friends Matt, Laura and Donna for lunch after church. We had a great meal as always and it was even better with good friends.

Here's a copy of the menu so you can begin to plan your trip to The Bake Shop! Click on the menu to zoom in and begin Pavlovian drooling.

The Bake Shop Sourdough Bread

Be sure to pick up a loaf of their amazing sourdough bread too. When we attended Girdwood Chapel we were blessed each week to have communion with The Bake Shop Bread (sometimes it was still warm from the oven).

The Sourdough used in their pancakes and bread is unique and tangy and comes with its own history:

"In the spring of 1964, Werner [the original owner of The Bake Shop] was on his way up to Fairbanks, Alaska, and he stopped at the old Sourdough Lodge on the Richardson Highway. He got to talking with the owner, who gave him some sourdough starter and the recipe for Sourdough pancakes. The owner of the Sourdough Lodge had gotten the recipe from a fortune seeking gold miner about 80 years ago.

Werner kept the sourdough going all those years, using it for the pancakes, bread and buns, without having to use any regular yeast. Since the sourdough is renewed daily and is very active, the pancakes are first class!

We [the current owners] still use this same sourdough today. It is being 'fed' and 'doubled' every day and our bakers will tell you that it has it's very own temperamental personality, thus making it quite a challenge to work with." http://www.thebakeshop.com/history.php.

  1. You made our memories of being with you at The Bake Shop come alive. Now, all I can think about are sourdough pancakes! Such a delightful place to visit. I also remember the flowers outside The Bake Shop looking like they were on steroids. After inquiring about what kind of fertilizer they use to grow such extaordinarily healthy plants, I was told it was mainly the long daylight hours that made the plants flourish. And did they ever!
