A Trip To The Zoo!

For Liz's birthday, we went to the Anchorage Zoo. Most of the animals there are "rescue animals," either orphaned or injured.

We were surprised at the size of the polar bear. They are much larger than the black bears we see at the camp.

Liz and her new alpaca friend pose for the camera.

Liz and her new friend are curious about each other.

This is what Liz saw just before her new friend spit in her face! Apparently this is one of the ways alpacas communicate that their personal space is being invaded. Liz still likes her friend, in spite of this social faux pas.

Here is a dall sheep. Typically, we only see these animals from hundreds of feet away on rocky ledges. One of the dall sheep (not pictured) only had one horn. I'm sure there's an interesting story behind the missing horn, but we were not privy to it, and this guy wouldn't talk about his uncle.

  1. That little alpaca is so cute. Looks like he's smiling. Sorry he felt it
    necessary to spit.
My, what big paws you have,
    Mr. Polar Bear!
