The Bear Paw Festival

This year marked the 25th Anniversary of the Bear Paw Festival held in Eagle River (the nearest town to where we now live). Last year we worked at the event selling elk burgers, but this year we actually had a chance to enjoy the event! This event has true Alaskan flair. Here is a list of some of the unique events.

Grand Parade: down the Old Glenn Highway, Business Boulevard and Centerfield Drive in Eagle River.

Running With The Bears Tri-Bear-A-Thon 300 Yard Fun Run: Participants had 30 minutes to complete the race however they chose: crawling, rolling, strolling, walking or running with the bears.

Dog & Owner Look-A-Like Contest: People who resemble their pets dressed in creative costumes and competed for prizes.

The Great Alaska Odor-Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest: Youth aged 5-15 wore their stinkiest sneakers with the hope of being chosen. The judges smelled each pair of sneakers to determine the most foul pair. The winner received a year's supply of Odor-Eaters products, fun gifts, a trophy and their name enshrined in the Odor Eaters Hall of Fumes.

Super Bear Duct Tape Sculpture: Participants helped build and decorate a bear with duct tape. There was also a contest to name the bear. The winner received a $250 gift certificate from Spenard Builders Supply.

Missing this year was the Bear Paw Outhouse Race. Last year the Outhouse Race was part of the festival, but we didn't see it on the schedule this year. In the past, trophies were awarded for 1st place, best theme, most colorful, people's choice, cleanest and the Red Lantern. The race was actually a fundraising event to send University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) students to the lower 48 to help Habitat for Humanity. Here are some pictures of the outhouses from a winter festival.
